Arlington County Birth Records History

The area that is now Arlington County was part of the District of Columbia from 1791 to 1846, when it was retroceded to Virginia and renamed Alexandria County. When Virginia's statewide birth registration law took effect in 1853, the area was registered under Alexandria County. Birth registers for Alexandria County from 1853 to 1896 are on microfilm at the Library of Virginia. These registers are the main historical source for births in the Arlington area from that period.

Virginia ended statewide birth registration in 1896. From 1897 through June 13, 1912, there was no state requirement to register births. Arlington area births from this period are not in any official registration system. Church records, family papers, and newspaper birth announcements from Alexandria County papers are the main alternatives for this gap period.

Arlington County was officially named and separated from Alexandria County in 1920. Statewide birth registration had resumed in 1912, so there are state records for births in the Arlington area from June 14, 1912 onward, even though the county itself wasn't named Arlington until 1920. The records show the jurisdiction as Alexandria County for births before 1920 and Arlington County for births after that date.

Note: The city of Alexandria is an independent city separate from Arlington County. Birth records for Alexandria city events follow city record lines, not Arlington County records.
