Campbell County Birth Records History

Campbell County was established in 1782 from Bedford County. Virginia's statewide birth registration law took effect in 1853. Campbell County birth registers from 1853 to 1896 are on microfilm at the Library of Virginia. For births before 1782, Bedford County records are the appropriate starting point. For events between 1782 and 1853, before formal registration, church records, estate inventories, and family Bibles are the main sources.

Virginia ended registration in 1896. From 1897 through June 13, 1912, no statewide birth records exist. Campbell County, being adjacent to Lynchburg, has some access to local newspaper birth announcements from Lynchburg papers from this period. Church records from Baptist, Methodist, and Presbyterian congregations in the Rustburg area are also useful alternatives for the gap years.

Statewide registration resumed June 14, 1912. Records have been continuous since then. The Jones Memorial Library in Lynchburg, while in an independent city, serves as a genealogy resource for the broader central Virginia region including Campbell County and holds local history materials, city directories, and access to databases.
