Carroll County Birth Records History

Carroll County was established in 1842 from Grayson County. Virginia's statewide birth registration law took effect in 1853, and Carroll County submitted annual birth returns under that system. Birth registers from 1853 to 1896 are on microfilm at the Library of Virginia. For births before 1842, Grayson County records are the appropriate starting point.

Virginia ended its registration requirement in 1896. From 1897 through June 13, 1912, no statewide system existed for recording births. Church records from the Baptist, Methodist, and Brethren congregations that served the Carroll County area are the best alternatives for this gap period. The county's rural and mountain character means that local church records are especially important. Some have been transcribed and are held by local historical societies.

Statewide registration resumed June 14, 1912, and records have been continuous since then. FamilySearch provides free online access to Virginia Birth Registers, 1853-1911, and Virginia Birth Records, 1912-2015, both including Carroll County entries. Ancestry.com is accessible free at Virginia public library branches.
