Warren County Birth Records History

Warren County was established in 1836. Virginia's statewide birth registration law took effect in 1853. Birth registers from 1853 to 1896 are on microfilm at the Library of Virginia. Virginia ended registration in 1896, creating a gap until June 14, 1912. Church records from the Episcopal, Baptist, Lutheran, and other denominations that served the county are the main alternatives for both the pre-registration and gap periods.

Warren County's Civil War history -- including the famous Belle Boyd spy case centered in Front Royal -- means that some records from the 1861-1865 period may be incomplete or scattered. The county changed hands multiple times during the war, and courthouse records may reflect that turmoil. German-heritage families who settled the northern Shenandoah Valley from Pennsylvania are well represented in Warren County records. Their church records, often kept in German, are important supplements to courthouse materials.

FamilySearch provides free online access to Virginia Birth Registers, 1853-1911, and Virginia Birth Records, 1912-2015, both including Warren County entries.
