Augusta County Birth Records History

Augusta County was established in 1738 and has records going back nearly three centuries. Virginia's first statewide birth registration law took effect in 1853, and Augusta County submitted annual birth returns to the state under that system. Birth registers from 1853 to 1896 are on microfilm at the Library of Virginia. The Library of Virginia also holds extensive Augusta County court records on microfilm, including order books, minute books, and chancery cases, which genealogists use alongside birth data.

Virginia ended its birth registration requirement in 1896. From 1897 through June 13, 1912, there was no statewide mandate to track births. Augusta County did not maintain a consistent birth register during this gap. Church records are especially valuable for this period in Augusta County, which has a long history of Presbyterian, Lutheran, and other Protestant congregations that kept detailed baptism registers. Some of these older church records have been transcribed and donated to the historical society or the Library of Virginia.

Statewide registration resumed June 14, 1912, and records have been continuous since then. For births before 1853, the main sources are church records, family Bibles, estate inventories that list minor children, and older land and court records. Augusta County's extensive early records make it one of the better-documented old Virginia counties for pre-registration genealogical research.
