For Bath County's own records from 1790 forward, the courthouse in Warm Springs is the starting point.

Bath County Birth Records History

Bath County was established in 1790. Virginia's statewide birth registration law took effect in 1853, and Bath County submitted annual birth returns under that system. Birth registers from 1853 to 1896 are on microfilm at the Library of Virginia in Richmond. For events before 1790, researchers need to look in the parent county records. Augusta County, one of Bath's parent counties, has records going back to 1745 and is a common starting point for pre-Bath genealogical research in the area.

Virginia ended its birth registration requirement in 1896. From 1897 through June 13, 1912, there was no statewide system for recording births. Bath County is rural and sparsely settled, and few unofficial records exist from this period. Church records are the main alternative source. Several churches in the Warm Springs and Hot Springs areas maintained baptism registers, and some of these have been transcribed or donated to the Bath County Historical Society.

Statewide registration resumed June 14, 1912. State records cover all reported Bath County births from that date forward. For births that were never registered, contact the Office of Vital Records in Richmond about the delayed birth certificate process. The evidence requirements include sworn affidavits from family members, early census records, school enrollment documents, and other materials that establish the date and place of birth.

The Bath County Historical Society and the Library of Virginia both hold materials related to older Bath County families. Church records, family Bibles, estate inventories, and land records from the Bath and Augusta County collections are the primary resources for pre-1853 research in this area.

Note: Bath County was formed partly from lands that are now in West Virginia. For births in the Greenbrier River valley area before statehood changes, West Virginia archives may also be relevant to your research.

The Library of Virginia in Richmond holds Bath County birth registers from 1853 to 1896 on microfilm. The Library also holds Augusta County records that cover the pre-Bath period. Microfilm reels can be borrowed through Interlibrary Loan from your local public library. The Library is at 800 E. Broad Street, Richmond, VA 23219. The Archives reference desk is at (804) 692-3888.

FamilySearch offers free online access to Virginia Birth Registers, 1853-1911, and Virginia Birth Records, 1912-2015, both including Bath County entries. FamilySearch is searchable at no cost. Ancestry.com subscribers can also search digitized Virginia birth records online. Virginia public library cardholders can access Ancestry Library Edition free at any branch library in the state.

Bath County's small size and rural character mean that local churches and the county historical society often hold records not found in state databases. If you are researching Bath County families from the late 19th or early 20th century, it is worth checking with local churches directly to ask whether they have kept baptism records from that era.
