Essex County Birth Records History

Essex County was established in 1692. Virginia's statewide birth registration law took effect in 1853. Birth registers from 1853 to 1896 are on microfilm at the Library of Virginia. For births before 1853, the county's land records, court files, and church registers from the 17th and 18th centuries are the main sources. Essex County is one of the older Virginia counties and has records going back to its founding year.

Virginia ended its registration requirement in 1896. From 1897 through June 13, 1912, no statewide system existed for recording births. Church records from the Episcopal, Baptist, and Methodist congregations that served Essex County are the best alternatives for this gap period. Some Essex County church records are held by the Library of Virginia or the Virginia Historical Society. Statewide registration resumed June 14, 1912, and records have been maintained since then.

FamilySearch provides free online access to Virginia Birth Registers, 1853-1911, and Virginia Birth Records, 1912-2015, both including Essex County entries. The Virginia Slave Birth Index, 1853-1866, is also on FamilySearch and is relevant for researchers tracing African American Essex County families. Ancestry.com holds digitized Virginia birth records accessible free at Virginia public library branches.
