Richmond County was established in 1692 and is one of the older counties on Virginia's Northern Neck. The county was formed from Rappahannock County, an early county that was abolished and divided in the 1690s. Westmoreland County is adjacent to the north. The Northern Neck was home to several prominent Virginia families in the colonial era, including families connected to George Washington and James Madison. Records from the Northern Neck tend to be better preserved than those from other parts of Virginia because the area saw less Civil War disruption.

Richmond County Birth Records History

Richmond County was established in 1692. Virginia's statewide birth registration law took effect in 1853. Birth registers from 1853 to 1896 are on microfilm at the Library of Virginia. Virginia ended registration in 1896, creating a gap until June 14, 1912. Church records from the Episcopal, Baptist, and other denominations that served the county are the main alternatives for both the pre-registration and gap periods.

Richmond County's long history on the Northern Neck means researchers can trace some families back to the 1690s through courthouse records. The county's Anglican/Episcopal parishes maintained baptism registers from the colonial era, and some of those records survive. The Virginia Slave Birth Index, 1853-1866, on FamilySearch covers Richmond County entries. The Northern Neck's geographic isolation helped preserve courthouse records that were lost in other parts of Virginia during the Civil War.

FamilySearch provides free online access to Virginia Birth Registers, 1853-1911, and Virginia Birth Records, 1912-2015, both including Richmond County entries. Ancestry.com holds digitized Virginia birth records accessible free at Virginia public library branches. Note that searches for "Richmond County" must be distinguished from the city of Richmond to get the correct results.
